I love parables. Parables are stories that may have a spiritual or moral lesson in it. They are simple and if powerful, I believe that in tandem with application of our our social work theories in practice, they can be effective.
I love using stories to help a client connect their situation to a general concept I want them to learn. I would prefer to read a client a story that has been well written and thought out, rather than self-disclose, but then again, there is a time and place for either type of intervention, if clinically appropriate.
